CULT OF NONE The Goetia

The 72 shadow poles of

The Goetia

Seventy-two spirits — and seventy-two angels who are their poles of light. Here is the shadow half of the map: each force in its raw, unintegrated face, set beside the angel that governs it.

Read this as a map of the human interior, not a menu of favours. As Crowley wrote in the 1904 Goetia, “the spirits of the Goetia are portions of the human brain.” The old “offices” below are traditional symbols of human drives — a suppressed voice, a buried anger, a hunger for power — not promises of treasure or love. You never reach for a shadow pole alone: you meet it with its angel, behind protection, inside a cast circle. The angel-and-spirit pairing is a later (Rudd-attributed) overlay, not part of the 1904 text — honest about that too.

The 72 spirits, ranks, legions and offices are from Mathers (trans.) & Crowley (ed.), The Book of the Goetia of Solomon the King (1904), public domain. Legion counts are as printed in the 1904 edition and vary between manuscripts (e.g. Focalor 30 here vs 348 in the Sloane MSS; Belial 50, not the 80 of many secondary sources). Ranks follow the same edition; several spirits carry dual ranks. The pairing with the 72 Shem ha-Mephorash angels follows the tradition associated with Dr Thomas Rudd (BL Harley MS 6483) — a later overlay on the Goetia, not part of it. The “offices” are literary attributions, presented as symbolic maps of human drives, not efficacious claims. Names are conventional romanisations. Take the technique, never the tribe.
