Bael

The first of the seventy-two, and a king. In the old books his one power is to make you go unseen. In the language of this path he is the shadow face of invisibility — the part of you that longs to move through the world unnoticed.

What the grimoires say

The 1904 Goetia names Bael the first principal spirit, a King ruling in the East over sixty-six legions, and gives him a single, plain office: he makes the one who calls him go invisible. Johann Weyer's older Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (1577) says the same, and both note he speaks with a hoarse, raucous voice.

He shows himself in more than one shape — sometimes a cat, sometimes a toad, sometimes a man, and sometimes all three at once. Le Breton's 1863 engraving fixes that last version in ink: one crowned body carrying three heads — cat, man and toad — on a set of spider's legs. (De Plancy's guess that this Bael is the Canaanite storm-god Baal is his own speculation, not settled fact.)

The shadow it carries

Read plainly, “invisibility” is not a stage trick — it is a whole part of you. The wish to disappear: to slip out of a room, to not be seen, to go quiet so nothing can land on you. Its shadow side is hiding and self-erasure. Its gold is real: discretion, privacy, the power to move through a place without being pulled at, the right to not perform.

His angel is Vehuiah — the very first spark, the will to begin and to appear. That is the polarity you actually work: the part that wants to vanish, met by the part that dares to show up. Meeting Bael with Vehuiah is meeting your own urge to hide while holding the hand of your own nerve to be seen.

Correspondences

A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.

Making a connection

What practitioners actually do, gathered and put in plain terms — not a script, a starting point:

• Sit with the seal. The sigil above is the traditional point of first contact: gaze softly into it, let it become familiar, and let impressions come without grabbing at them.
• Use the solar frame if you like structure: a Sunday, an hour of the Sun (sunrise to noon), a yellow or gold candle, a little frankincense.
• Chant the Enn softly as a way to settle attention, if you work the Demonolatry current — it is a modern mantra, nothing older.
• Introduce yourself and state your intent plainly. This is a first-name meeting, not a summons to command. Read “invisibility” broadly — discretion, a low profile, keeping your own affairs your own.
• Keep a journal. Write impressions, dreams and coincidences after each sitting. Over weeks the real relationship shows in the pattern, not in a single dramatic night.
• Honour your own experience. Where what you feel differs from the tables, trust what you felt — the map inclines, it does not command.
