Asmoday
The 32nd of the seventy-two, a king. Gives the Ring of Virtues. In the language of this path, Asmoday is a shadow pole — worked only with its angel, Vasariah.

What the grimoires say
In the 1904 Goetia, Asmoday is a King governing 72 legions. Gives the Ring of Virtues; teaches mathematics and crafts; guards treasure.
A Great King shown with three heads — bull, man, and ram — a serpent's tail, and fire issuing from his mouth. Grimoire lore has him ride a dragon/infernal beast and carry a lance and banner; he is linked to the lawful order AMAYMON.
“The Thirty-second Spirit is Asmoday, or Asmodai. He is a Great King, Strong and Powerful. He appeareth with Three Heads, whereof the first is like a Bull, the second like a Man, and the third like a Ram; he hath also the tail of a Serpent, and from his mouth issue Flames of Fire. He teacheth the Arts of Arithmetic, Astronomy, Geometry, and all Handicrafts. He giveth true Answers, maketh one Invincible, and showeth the place where Treasures lie. He governeth 72 Legions of Spirits. (Mathers/Crowley, Goetia, 1904 — public domain)”— Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia (1904), public domain
The shadow it carries
Stripped to the bone, Asmoday's traditional office turns on mastery of exact skills: mathematics, astronomy, geometry and crafts. Read plainly, that is a real human force; in the language of this path its raw, unowned form is a shadow pole. Its shadow is what that force does when it runs you from the dark; its gold is the same force — seen, owned, governed.
You never reach for it alone. Its light pole is the angel Vasariah; met together, behind protection, Asmoday becomes a disowned part of yourself approached while the light is already in the room.
Correspondences
A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.
| Correspondence | Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Tarot | 6 of Swords | Golden Dawn decan system / Crowley 777 (Aquarius decan 2 = Mercury in Aquarius) |
| Zodiac/decan | Aquarius 10-20 degrees (2nd decan) | Golden Dawn decan mapping |
| Planet | Sun | modern correspondence (rank-based: King = Sun) |
| Day | Sunday | modern correspondence (follows Sun) |
| Element | Air (fire also associated via his flaming aspect) | modern Demonolatry tables |
| Metal | Gold | modern correspondence (follows Sun) |
| Candle colour | Yellow / gold | modern correspondence tables |
| Incense | Frankincense | modern correspondence tables |
| Plant | No fixed traditional attribution | varies by source (modern tables inconsistent) |
| Animal | Serpent (from his serpent's tail); also bull and ram imagery | derived from grimoire form |
| Date-window | Jan 30 - Feb 8 | Golden Dawn decan calendar (Aquarius decan 2) |
Its modern Enn — a chant from the Demonolatry current, not found in any grimoire:
“Ayer avage Aloren Asmoday aken" — MODERN Demonolatry enn”
Making a connection
Gathered from what practitioners report, put plainly — a starting point, not a rule:
- Sit with the seal above as the first meeting-place: trace it, hold it in the mind’s eye, and let impressions arrive without grabbing at them.
- Set a gentle frame. Keep it simple — a yellow candle, a sunday, a little incense, a moment of quiet. If you work the Demonolatry current, chant the Enn softly — more like settling than commanding.
- Bring the real theme. Practitioners associate Asmoday with willpower, confidence and a sense of being unshakeable/invincible, guarding and stewarding resources or valuables. Name what you actually want, and ask — don’t demand.
- Journal before and after, and treat everything as your own experience, not fixed doctrine.
Rank, legions, direction and office are from the public-domain grimoires (Weyer 1577; Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia, 1904). Images are public domain: the 1904 seal and Louis Le Breton’s Dictionnaire Infernal engraving (1863). The Enn and the planet/day/colour/tarot correspondences are modern attributions (Demonolatry and compilations), flagged as such; sources disagree, and no copyrighted description or artwork is reproduced. Angel pairing per the Rudd tradition. Take the technique, never the tribe.
“Guard your treasure too tightly and you become its prisoner, not its king.”
