Phenex
The 37th of the seventy-two, a marquis. A marvellous poet and musician. In the language of this path, Phenex is a shadow pole — worked only with its angel, Aniel.

What the grimoires say
In the 1904 Goetia, Phenex is a Marquis governing 20 legions. A marvellous poet and musician; tells of the sciences.
A Great Marquis who appears as the phoenix bird with a child's voice, singing sweet notes the operator is warned not to heed. He is an excellent poet, teaches wonderful sciences, and hopes to return to the Seventh Throne after 1,200 years.
“The Thirty-seventh Spirit is Phenex (or Pheynix). He is a Great Marquis, and appeareth like the Bird Phoenix, having the Voice of a Child. He singeth many sweet notes before the Exorcist, which he must not regard. He will, if desired, put on Human Shape. He speaketh marvellously of all wonderful Sciences. He is an excellent Poet, and obedient. He hopeth to return to the Seventh Throne after 1,200 years. He governeth 20 Legions of Spirits. The shadow it carries
Stripped to the bone, Phenex's traditional office turns on poetry, music, eloquence and the arts. Read plainly, that is a real human force; in the language of this path its raw, unowned form is a shadow pole. Its shadow is what that force does when it runs you from the dark; its gold is the same force — seen, owned, governed.
You never reach for it alone. Its light pole is the angel Aniel; met together, behind protection, Phenex becomes a disowned part of yourself approached while the light is already in the room.
Correspondences
A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.
| Correspondence | Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Tarot | 2 of Wands | Golden Dawn decan system / Crowley 777 (Aries decan 1 = Mars in Aries) |
| Zodiac/decan | Aries 0-10 degrees (1st decan) | Golden Dawn decan mapping |
| Planet | Moon | modern correspondence (rank-based: Marquis = Moon) |
| Day | Monday | modern correspondence (follows Moon) |
| Element | Air (fire also associated via phoenix symbolism) | modern Demonolatry tables |
| Metal | Silver | modern correspondence (follows Moon) |
| Candle colour | Purple / violet | modern correspondence tables |
| Incense | Jasmine | modern correspondence tables |
| Plant | No fixed traditional attribution | varies by source |
| Animal | Phoenix (mythic firebird) | derived from grimoire form |
| Date-window | Mar 21-30 | Golden Dawn decan calendar (Aries decan 1) |
Its modern Enn — a chant from the Demonolatry current, not found in any grimoire:

Making a connection
Gathered from what practitioners report, put plainly — a starting point, not a rule:
- Sit with the seal above as the first meeting-place: trace it, hold it in the mind’s eye, and let impressions arrive without grabbing at them.
- Set a gentle frame. Keep it simple — a purple candle, a monday, a little incense, a moment of quiet. If you work the Demonolatry current, chant the Enn softly — more like settling than commanding.
- Bring the real theme. Practitioners associate Phenex with inspiration and 'wonderful sciences' — creative and intellectual awakening, renewal, death-and-rebirth and transformation (phoenix symbolism). Name what you actually want, and ask — don’t demand.
- Journal before and after, and treat everything as your own experience, not fixed doctrine.
Rank, legions, direction and office are from the public-domain grimoires (Weyer 1577; Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia, 1904). Images are public domain: the 1904 seal. The Enn and the planet/day/colour/tarot correspondences are modern attributions (Demonolatry and compilations), flagged as such; sources disagree, and no copyrighted description or artwork is reproduced. Angel pairing per the Rudd tradition. Take the technique, never the tribe.
“Even what burns to nothing rises again singing. So can you.”
