What the grimoires say
In the 1904 Goetia, Alloces is a Duke governing 36 legions. Teaches astronomy and the liberal sciences; gives good familiars.
A Great Duke, mighty and strong. He rides in on a large horse in the guise of a warrior/soldier, his face like a lion's - deeply reddened, with flaming eyes. His voice is hoarse and booming. He teaches astronomy and all the liberal sciences and supplies good familiar spirits, commanding 36 legions.
“The Fifty-second Spirit is Alloces, or Alocas. He is a Duke, Great, Mighty, and Strong, appearing in the Form of a Warrior riding upon a Great Horse. His Face is like that of a Lion, very Red, and having Flaming Eyes. His Speech is hoarse and very big. His Office is to teach the Art of Astronomy, and all the Liberal Sciences. He bringeth unto thee Good Familiars; also he ruleth over 36 Legions of Spirits. (Mathers/Crowley, Goetia 1904 - public domain)”— Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia (1904), public domain
The shadow it carries
Stripped to the bone, Alloces's traditional office turns on study of astronomy/astrology and the liberal sciences - a patron for scholarship and a wide, cosmic perspective. Read plainly, that is a real human force; in the language of this path its raw, unowned form is a shadow pole. Its shadow is what that force does when it runs you from the dark; its gold is the same force — seen, owned, governed.
You never reach for it alone. Its light pole is the angel Imamiah; met together, behind protection, Alloces becomes a disowned part of yourself approached while the light is already in the room.
Correspondences
A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.
| Correspondence | Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Fire | modern Demonolatry (enn/element tradition) |
| Tarot | 8 of Pentacles/Disks | modern Golden Dawn-based compilation (Goetic Impressions) |
| Zodiac/decan (GD table) | Virgo, 1st decan | modern Golden Dawn-based compilation; varies by source |
| Zodiac (paired Shem angel) | Sagittarius 15-20 deg | Kabbalistic Shem ha-Mephorash 5-deg attribution of angel Imamiah - a DIFFERENT system that disagrees with the GD table above |
| Planet | Venus | modern occult compilation; varies (Agrippa element = Air) |
| Day | Friday | modern (follows Venus attribution) |
| Metal | Copper | modern (follows Venus) |
| Candle colour | Green | modern occult compilation |
| Incense | Sandalwood | modern occult compilation |
| Plant | Rose / vervain / myrtle (Venusian herbs) | derived from planetary ruler; not a fixed grimoire datum |
| Animal | Lion and horse | traditional grimoire (from his appearance) |
| Date-window | approx. 8-12 December | Shem angel calendar (Imamiah); dates shift +/-1 day by source |
Its modern Enn — a chant from the Demonolatry current, not found in any grimoire:
“Typan efna Alloces met tasa”
Making a connection
Gathered from what practitioners report, put plainly — a starting point, not a rule:
- Sit with the seal above as the first meeting-place: trace it, hold it in the mind’s eye, and let impressions arrive without grabbing at them.
- Set a gentle frame. Keep it simple — a green candle, a friday, a little incense, a moment of quiet. If you work the Demonolatry current, chant the Enn softly — more like settling than commanding.
- Bring the real theme. Practitioners associate Alloces with acquiring a reliable familiar/helper spirit to support ongoing work, warrior steadiness and focus during long or demanding study. Name what you actually want, and ask — don’t demand.
- Journal before and after, and treat everything as your own experience, not fixed doctrine.
Rank, legions, direction and office are from the public-domain grimoires (Weyer 1577; Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia, 1904). Images are public domain: the 1904 seal and Louis Le Breton’s Dictionnaire Infernal engraving (1863). The Enn and the planet/day/colour/tarot correspondences are modern attributions (Demonolatry and compilations), flagged as such; sources disagree, and no copyrighted description or artwork is reproduced. Angel pairing per the Rudd tradition. Take the technique, never the tribe.
