#59 · Marquis
Orias
The 59th of the seventy-two, a marquis. Teaches the virtues of the stars. In the language of this path, Orias is a shadow pole — worked only with its angel, Harahel.

What the grimoires say
In the 1904 Goetia, Orias is a Marquis governing 30 legions. Teaches the virtues of the stars; transforms men; gives dignities and favour.
In the 1904 Goetia (Mathers/Crowley) he shows as a lion riding a strong horse and carrying a serpent's tail, gripping two hissing serpents in his right hand. De Plancy's tradition keeps the same lion-on-horseback, serpent-handed figure. (Summary in my own words; no Le Breton engraving of Orias exists.)
“The Fifty-ninth Spirit is Orias. He is a Great Marquis, and appeareth in the Form of a Lion, riding upon a Horse Mighty and Strong, with a Serpent's Tail; and he holdeth in his Right Hand two Great Serpents hissing. His Office is to teach the Virtues of the Stars, and to know the Mansions of the Planets, and how to understand their Virtues. He also transformeth Men, and giveth Dignities, Prelacies, and Confirmation thereof, and Favour with Friends and Foes. He governeth 30 Legions of Spirits.”— Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia (1904), public domain
The shadow it carries
Stripped to the bone, Orias's traditional office turns on astrology and the virtues of the fixed stars; understanding planetary mansions and timing. Read plainly, that is a real human force; in the language of this path its raw, unowned form is a shadow pole. Its shadow is what that force does when it runs you from the dark; its gold is the same force — seen, owned, governed.
You never reach for it alone. Its light pole is the angel Harahel; met together, behind protection, Orias becomes a disowned part of yourself approached while the light is already in the room.
Correspondences
A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.
| Correspondence | Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Tarot | 4 of Pentacles (Rudd / modern goetic table); 6 of Cups in the Golden Dawn decan scheme | modern — two competing systems |
| Zodiac/decan | Capricorn 20–25° (Joy of Satan quinance); Scorpio 10–20° (Golden Dawn/Rudd table) | modern — systems disagree |
| Planet | Mercury (Joy of Satan); Moon (Golden Dawn/Rudd table) | modern — varies by source |
| Day | Wednesday (from Mercury attribution) / Monday (from Moon attribution) | modern — derived from planetary ruler, varies |
| Element | Earth (Joy of Satan); Fire/Air (Golden Dawn table) | modern — varies by source |
| Metal | Mercury/quicksilver (Joy of Satan); Silver (Golden Dawn table) | modern — varies by source |
| Candle colour | White (Joy of Satan); Purple (Golden Dawn table) | modern — varies by source |
| Incense | Jasmine | modern correspondence table |
| Date-window | Jan 10–14 (Joy of Satan quinance); Nov 2–12 (Golden Dawn/Rudd table) | modern — systems disagree |
| Animal | Lion, horse, serpent (from the grimoire form) | traditional / grimoire |
Its modern Enn — a chant from the Demonolatry current, not found in any grimoire:
“Lirach mena Orias Anay na" — MODERN”
Making a connection
Gathered from what practitioners report, put plainly — a starting point, not a rule:
- Sit with the seal above as the first meeting-place: trace it, hold it in the mind’s eye, and let impressions arrive without grabbing at them.
- Set a gentle frame. Keep it simple — a white candle, a wednesday, a little incense, a moment of quiet. If you work the Demonolatry current, chant the Enn softly — more like settling than commanding.
- Bring the real theme. Practitioners associate Orias with divinatory and electional work — reading how planetary influences bear on a matter, elevation of social standing: dignities, offices, titles, prelacies. Name what you actually want, and ask — don’t demand.
- Journal before and after, and treat everything as your own experience, not fixed doctrine.
Rank, legions, direction and office are from the public-domain grimoires (Weyer 1577; Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia, 1904). Images are public domain: the 1904 seal. The Enn and the planet/day/colour/tarot correspondences are modern attributions (Demonolatry and compilations), flagged as such; sources disagree, and no copyrighted description or artwork is reproduced. Angel pairing per the Rudd tradition. Take the technique, never the tribe.
