#53 · President
Camio
The 53rd of the seventy-two, a president. Makes men understand birds, animals and waters. In the language of this path, Camio is a shadow pole — worked only with its angel, Nanael.

What the grimoires say
In the 1904 Goetia, Camio is a President governing 30 legions. Makes men understand birds, animals and waters; true answers of the future.
A Great President who first appears as the bird called a thrush, then takes the shape of a man holding a sharp sword. His answers seem to rise from burning ashes or coals. He grants understanding of the voices of birds, cattle and dogs, and the sound of waters, and gives true answers about things to come. He rules 30 legions and was formerly of the Order of Angels.
“The Fifty-third Spirit is Camio, or Caim. He is a Great President, and appeareth in the Form of the Bird called a Thrush at first, but afterwards he putteth on the Shape of a Man carrying in his Hand a Sharp Sword. He ruleth over 30 Legions of Spirits. (Goetia 1904 - public domain)”— Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia (1904), public domain
The shadow it carries
Stripped to the bone, Camio's traditional office turns on understanding 'languages' beyond human speech - reading birds, animals and natural omens. Read plainly, that is a real human force; in the language of this path its raw, unowned form is a shadow pole. Its shadow is what that force does when it runs you from the dark; its gold is the same force — seen, owned, governed.
You never reach for it alone. Its light pole is the angel Nanael; met together, behind protection, Camio becomes a disowned part of yourself approached while the light is already in the room.
Correspondences
A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.
| Correspondence | Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Air | modern Demonolatry (enn/element tradition); Agrippa gives Fire |
| Tarot | 9 of Pentacles/Disks | modern Golden Dawn-based compilation (Goetic Impressions) |
| Zodiac/decan (GD table) | Virgo, 2nd decan | modern Golden Dawn-based compilation; varies by source |
| Zodiac (paired Shem angel) | Sagittarius 20-25 deg | Kabbalistic Shem 5-deg attribution of angel Nanael - different system, disagrees with GD table |
| Planet | Mercury | modern occult compilation |
| Day | Wednesday | modern (follows Mercury) |
| Metal | Mercury/quicksilver | modern (follows Mercury) |
| Candle colour | Orange | modern occult compilation |
| Incense | Storax | modern occult compilation |
| Plant | Fennel / lavender / marjoram (Mercurial herbs) | derived from planetary ruler; not a fixed grimoire datum |
| Animal | Thrush / bird | traditional grimoire (from his appearance) |
| Date-window | approx. 13-16 December | Shem angel calendar (Nanael); dates shift by source |
Its modern Enn — a chant from the Demonolatry current, not found in any grimoire:
“Tasa on ca Caim renich”
Making a connection
Gathered from what practitioners report, put plainly — a starting point, not a rule:
- Sit with the seal above as the first meeting-place: trace it, hold it in the mind’s eye, and let impressions arrive without grabbing at them.
- Set a gentle frame. Keep it simple — a orange candle, a wednesday, a little incense, a moment of quiet. If you work the Demonolatry current, chant the Enn softly — more like settling than commanding.
- Bring the real theme. Practitioners associate Camio with sharpening logic, argument and clear reasoning (the sword), divination and true answers about future outcomes. Name what you actually want, and ask — don’t demand.
- Journal before and after, and treat everything as your own experience, not fixed doctrine.
Rank, legions, direction and office are from the public-domain grimoires (Weyer 1577; Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia, 1904). Images are public domain: the 1904 seal and Louis Le Breton’s Dictionnaire Infernal engraving (1863). The Enn and the planet/day/colour/tarot correspondences are modern attributions (Demonolatry and compilations), flagged as such; sources disagree, and no copyrighted description or artwork is reproduced. Angel pairing per the Rudd tradition. Take the technique, never the tribe.
