Bathin
The 18th of the seventy-two, a duke. Virtues of herbs and stones. In the language of this path, Bathin is a shadow pole — worked only with its angel, Caliel.

What the grimoires say
In the 1904 Goetia, Bathin is a Duke governing 30 legions. Virtues of herbs and stones; transports men swiftly between countries.
A strong man with a serpent's tail, seated on a pale-coloured horse. A mighty Duke over 30 legions.
“The Eighteenth Spirit is Bathin. He is a Mighty and Strong Duke, and appeareth like a strong man with the tail of a Serpent, sitting upon a Pale-Coloured Horse. He knoweth the Virtues of Herbs and Precious Stones, and can transport men suddenly from one Country to another. He ruleth over 30 Legions of Spirits. The shadow it carries
Stripped to the bone, Bathin's traditional office turns on knowledge of herbs and precious/healing stones — plant and mineral lore. Read plainly, that is a real human force; in the language of this path its raw, unowned form is a shadow pole. Its shadow is what that force does when it runs you from the dark; its gold is the same force — seen, owned, governed.
You never reach for it alone. Its light pole is the angel Caliel; met together, behind protection, Bathin becomes a disowned part of yourself approached while the light is already in the room.
Correspondences
A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.
| Correspondence | Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Tarot | 10 of Pentacles (Virgo 20-30 deg); Rudd system gives 10 of Swords | modern / Golden Dawn decan; varies by system |
| Zodiac / decan | Virgo 3rd decan (20-30 deg), day demon; Rudd system places him in Gemini 25-30 deg | modern (Connolly / Golden Dawn); differs from Rudd |
| Planet | Venus | modern correspondence table |
| Day | Friday | modern correspondence table |
| Element | Earth | modern Demonolatry (Goetic Impressions); Golden Dawn decan would give Air |
| Metal | Copper | modern correspondence table |
| Candle colour | Green | modern correspondence table |
| Incense | Sandalwood | modern correspondence table |
| Plant | Herbs generally (he is said to know the virtues of herbs) | traditional / grimoire theme |
| Animal | Serpent (tail) and pale horse | traditional / grimoire appearance |
| Date-window | Sep 12-22 (Connolly) / Jun 16-21 (Runyon) | modern demon-calendar; varies by source |
Its modern Enn — a chant from the Demonolatry current, not found in any grimoire:
“Dyen Pretore on ca Bathin" — MODERN”
Making a connection
Gathered from what practitioners report, put plainly — a starting point, not a rule:
- Sit with the seal above as the first meeting-place: trace it, hold it in the mind’s eye, and let impressions arrive without grabbing at them.
- Set a gentle frame. Keep it simple — a green candle, a friday, a little incense, a moment of quiet. If you work the Demonolatry current, chant the Enn softly — more like settling than commanding.
- Bring the real theme. Practitioners associate Bathin with sudden movement and astral travel (transporting men between countries), approached through the seal and enn with a focused intent to learn or to move quickly. Name what you actually want, and ask — don’t demand.
- Journal before and after, and treat everything as your own experience, not fixed doctrine.
Rank, legions, direction and office are from the public-domain grimoires (Weyer 1577; Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia, 1904). Images are public domain: the 1904 seal. The Enn and the planet/day/colour/tarot correspondences are modern attributions (Demonolatry and compilations), flagged as such; sources disagree, and no copyrighted description or artwork is reproduced. Angel pairing per the Rudd tradition. Take the technique, never the tribe.
