What the grimoires say
In the 1904 Goetia, Vine is a King & Earl governing 36 legions. Discovers hidden things and the past/present/future; builds towers; raises storms.
A Great King and Earl who shows himself as a lion (or lion-headed figure) mounted on a black horse and gripping a serpent or viper in his hand.
“The Forty-fifth Spirit is Vine, or Vinea. He is a Great King, and an Earl; and appeareth in the form of a Lion, riding upon a Black Horse, and bearing a Viper in his hand. His Office is to discover Things Hidden, Witches, Wizards, and Things Present, Past, and to Come. He, at the command of the Exorcist, will build Towers, overthrow Great Stone Walls, and make the Waters rough with Storms. He governeth 36 Legions of Spirits.”— Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia (1904), public domain
The shadow it carries
Stripped to the bone, Vine's traditional office turns on uncovering hidden things, secrets and lies. Read plainly, that is a real human force; in the language of this path its raw, unowned form is a shadow pole. Its shadow is what that force does when it runs you from the dark; its gold is the same force — seen, owned, governed.
You never reach for it alone. Its light pole is the angel Sealiah; met together, behind protection, Vine becomes a disowned part of yourself approached while the light is already in the room.
Correspondences
A word of honesty first: almost none of the table below is from the old grimoires. The rank, legions, direction and office are traditional; the planet, day, colour, tarot, incense and the Enn are modern attributions (mostly 20th–21st-century Demonolatry and correspondence compilations), and the sources openly disagree. Use them as a working frame, not as law.
| Correspondence | Value | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Tarot | 10 of Swords | Golden Dawn decan (Sun in Gemini, 3rd decan) — JoS system instead gives 6 of Cups; varies by source |
| Zodiac/decan | Gemini 21-30 (3rd/nocturnal decan) | Golden Dawn decan (Rudd/Leitch mapping) — JoS system places him at Scorpio 10-14; varies by source |
| Planet | Sun (some list Mars) | modern attribution; varies by source |
| Day | Sunday | derived from planetary rulership (Sun) |
| Element | Water | modern Demonolatry (enn-list element) |
| Metal | Gold | traditional planetary metal (Sun) |
| Candle colour | Yellow, or White | modern correspondence tables (JoS/goetic); varies |
| Animal | Lion, black horse, serpent/viper | grimoire appearance (1904 Goetia) |
| Date-window | approx. 11-21 June | Golden Dawn decan (Sun transit of Gemini 21-30); JoS gives early November; varies by source |
Its modern Enn — a chant from the Demonolatry current, not found in any grimoire:
“Eyesta nas Vine ca laris”
Making a connection
Gathered from what practitioners report, put plainly — a starting point, not a rule:
- Sit with the seal above as the first meeting-place: trace it, hold it in the mind’s eye, and let impressions arrive without grabbing at them.
- Set a gentle frame. Keep it simple — a yellow, or white candle, a sunday, a little incense, a moment of quiet. If you work the Demonolatry current, chant the Enn softly — more like settling than commanding.
- Bring the real theme. Practitioners associate Vine with detecting hidden enemies and directed witchcraft / malefic work against you, divination of past, present and future. Name what you actually want, and ask — don’t demand.
- Journal before and after, and treat everything as your own experience, not fixed doctrine.
Rank, legions, direction and office are from the public-domain grimoires (Weyer 1577; Mathers & Crowley, The Goetia, 1904). Images are public domain: the 1904 seal. The Enn and the planet/day/colour/tarot correspondences are modern attributions (Demonolatry and compilations), flagged as such; sources disagree, and no copyrighted description or artwork is reproduced. Angel pairing per the Rudd tradition. Take the technique, never the tribe.
“See clearly first. Build second. Most towers fall because no one looked.”
